YouTube prioritizes credible first aid videos to combat misinformation

1 Mins read

YouTube unveiled a new feature providing quick access to vetted first aid instructional videos during health emergencies. The company partnered with hospitals and health organizations to promote reliable, step-by-step guidance atop search results.

The initiative aims to give users instant medical know-how from reputable sources when minutes matter most. YouTube will pin the short first aid videos on topics like heart attacks, choking, seizures and opioid overdoses.

The First Aid Information Shelves contain videos from groups including the American Heart Association, Mass General Brigham and the Mexican Red Cross. They demonstrate proper techniques to apply before paramedics arrive.

For instance, search choking and find a doctor’s advice on performing the Heimlich maneuver. Or locate CPR tutorials from experts creating the latest guidelines.

YouTube wants to limit medical misinformation frequently found in user-generated content. The company faced criticism early in the pandemic for rampant misleading claims.

The videos urge calling 911 immediately in a crisis before administering first aid. They aim to stabilize patients and prevent additional harm.

Mass General Brigham produced videos on 11 topics. Translations from the Mexican Red Cross enabled launching the project in both English and Spanish initially.

Every minute, every second counts,” Dr. Merranda Logan, said. “These videos provide clear, concise information to help in an emergency.”

YouTube plans to expand available languages and health topics covered in the months ahead. It will also update videos regularly to keep the guidance current.

While not a substitute for emergency services, the videos can equip viewers with potentially lifesaving skills while awaiting help.

The switch demonstrates YouTube continuing efforts to highlight credible health sources. Last year it introduced strict policies to remove videos with medical misinformation. But challenges remain combating misleading content at scale. The first aid shelves represent progress prioritizing facts alongside accessibility.
