Top 10 IT skills that will shape 2024, according to Coursera

The landscape of information technology is ever-shifting, and in 2024, the terrain demands agility and mastery of specific skill sets. Forget generic boot camps – we are ascending the summit of the most in-demand IT skills, and a number of these skills can be horned just from the lonely corner of your bedroom; or the basement – where many legends are forged and careers skyrocketed.

While there are several skills that could launch your career to the moon, some of them are more sought after than others. A number of the most lucrative skills might not even make it to the top of the list, especially as some people might have tagged them as “too challenging,” who doesn’t like soft life, right?

One of the platforms where lots of tech gurus were moulded is Coursera. Coursera is an online platform where you can get proper education about different fields of study. Other platforms that provides similar service include Udemy, edX, Udacity, FutureLearn, Skillshare, Pluralsight, LinkedIn Learning, etc. However, our focus on this article will be on Coursera.

Coursera takes it upon itself to release lists of programs and skills that its users troop in to get over a particular year. Although, Coursera has not made a release for 2024, as of now, the following skills are the top 10 IT skills that are projected to dominate 2024:

  1. System Security: Understanding how to secure networks, operating systems, and applications is crucial in today’s cyber-conscious world. Familiarity with tools like firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and secure coding practices is vital.
  2. Linux: Proficiency in the Linux operating system is highly sought after for various IT roles, especially system administration, cloud computing, and DevOps. Strong knowledge of Linux commands, scripting, and system architecture is beneficial.
  3. Systems Design: This skill involves translating business needs into efficient and scalable technical solutions. It requires understanding software architecture, data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
  4. React: This popular JavaScript framework is widely used for building dynamic and interactive web user interfaces. Mastering React concepts like components, state management, and routing is beneficial.
  5. Software Architecture: Building complex software systems requires an understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices. Skills in analyzing requirements, identifying components, and defining data flows are crucial.
  6. Computer Security Incident Management (CSIM): With cyberattacks becoming increasingly sophisticated, the ability to detect, analyze, and respond to security incidents effectively is valuable. Understanding incident response processes, forensics, and threat intelligence is important.
  7. Django: This Python web framework is known for its clean syntax, security features, and large community. Learning Django skills like model creation, views, and URLs can open doors to web development opportunities.
  8. Cyberattacks: Understanding the different types of cyberattacks, their tactics, and potential mitigation strategies is valuable for various IT roles. Awareness of malware, phishing, ransomware, and vulnerability exploitation is crucial.
  9. Security Software: Familiarity with different security software tools and their functionalities enhances your ability to secure IT systems. This includes knowledge of antivirus software, endpoint protection, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
  10. Security Strategy: Developing and implementing a comprehensive security strategy requires understanding risk management, compliance regulations, and incident response processes. Skills in threat analysis, vulnerability assessment, and security policy creation are key.
