Google finally brings dark mode to Docs, Sheets, and Slides

1 Mins read

After waiting for a long time, Google is finally rolling out dark mode for its word processing apps – Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. The dark mode option will be available for Android users starting from today.

The California based tech giant says all its Android users will be able to switch their word processing apps to dark mode, starting from today. The update is expected to take about two weeks before going round. Users will be able to toggle between dark mode from the settings of the respective apps.

Google also says the apps are designed in a way that they use the system settings on the device they are installed. This means that when the system already runs dark mode, the apps would automatically switch to dark mode as well. However, the user has the choice to manually toggle the dark mode setting, if they wish.

It would be recalled that last year, Google promised to deliver dark mode to all its apps. This promise is gradually getting fulfilled. A number of Google products are already getting dark mode setting delivered to them. Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Chrome, and others have gotten dark mode. Google Maps do not have dark mode on iOS yet, however, the Android app has the option.

For a few years now, the request for dark mode has been on from both iOS and Android users. This is partly because of its supposed battery saving capability, and the less constraint it puts on the eye when using the device at night.

Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, are Google’s apps designed to rival Microsoft’s word processing apps – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, respectively.

While dark mode has not gone round both major mobile platforms, it is expected that the option would be available for major apps on iOS and Android, in the coming weeks.
