OpenAI Could Release GPT-5, the Next-Generation of Its Generative AI Model, Later This Year: Report

2 Mins read

OpenAI is gearing up to introduce the next generation of its artificial intelligence (AI) model, GPT-5 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformers 5), in the near future, according to a recent report. This new AI model will succeed GPT-4, which was officially launched in March 2023 and currently powers OpenAI’s renowned chatbot, ChatGPT. GPT-5 is expected to bring a host of new capabilities, including AI agents capable of operating autonomously. Additionally, OpenAI’s first text-to-video AI model, Sora, is also slated for release later this year.

Key Highlights:

  1. Anticipated Release: Business Insider reports suggest that GPT-5 could be unveiled around mid-year, possibly in June or July. The new AI model has reportedly been shared with some of OpenAI’s enterprise clients, who have lauded its enhanced capabilities over its predecessor, GPT-4.
  2. Enhanced Capabilities: GPT-5 is expected to come with significant enhancements over GPT-4. One notable addition will be the introduction of AI agents capable of operating autonomously. These AI agents, similar to trainable mini chatbots launched in November 2023, can be customized for specific tasks. However, the new skill of unsupervised operability represents a significant advancement.
  3. AI Agents: One of the key features of GPT-5 will be the introduction of AI agents that can perform tasks autonomously. While details about these AI agents are scarce, they appear to be similar to GPTs, trainable mini chatbots launched in November 2023, but with the added ability to operate unsupervised.
  4. Release Timeline Uncertainty: While the release of GPT-5 is anticipated in mid-year, the timeline is not set in stone. OpenAI is still in the process of training the model, leaving room for potential delays. In an interview with Lex Fridman, CEO Sam Altman was asked about when GPT-5 might be unveiled and he replied, “I don’t know. That’s the honest answer”. But at the same time, he highlighted that the difference between GPT-4 and GPT-5 will be similar to the difference between GPT-3 and GPT-4.
  5. Sora Project: OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, recently discussed another new project, Sora, which generates one-minute-long videos from simple text prompts. Sora is expected to be publicly available in the coming months and will be priced similarly to DALL-E, another AI model by OpenAI.

As OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI development, the upcoming release of GPT-5 and the potential introduction of Sora represent significant milestones in the field of artificial intelligence. These advancements promise to further revolutionize the way we interact with AI technology and pave the way for new applications across various industries.
