Android 15 Users will be able to Archive Apps to Save Storage whilst Preserving User In-AppData

2 Mins read

Android 15, set to release in the coming months, promises a groundbreaking new feature: App Archiving. This functionality allows users to free up storage space on their Android devices without entirely uninstalling apps. Similar to Apple’s App Offloading, Android’s App Archiving removes an app’s core functionality while preserving user data and settings, enabling seamless restoration when needed.

What is App Archiving?

App Archiving is a storage management feature that enables users to temporarily remove apps from their devices while retaining essential data and configurations. When an app is archived, its icon is adorned with a cloud symbol, signifying its archived status. Users can easily restore archived apps, picking up right where they left off without the hassle of reinstallation.

How Does it Work?

Currently available through the Google Play Store, App Archiving operates by automatically identifying and archiving infrequently used apps. Users can enable the “Automatically archive apps” option in the Play Store settings to initiate this process. Once activated, the system selectively archives apps to optimize storage space.

Benefits of App Archiving

  1. Frees Up Storage: By archiving unused apps, users can reclaim valuable storage space on their devices, enhancing performance and usability.
  2. Preserve User Data: Unlike traditional uninstallation methods, archiving ensures that user data and settings remain intact, facilitating seamless app restoration.
  3. Reduces Reinstallation Hassle: Archived apps can be effortlessly restored, eliminating the need to redownload data or reconfigure settings upon reinstallation.

Limitations to Consider

  1. Limited to Play Store Apps: Presently, App Archiving only supports apps downloaded from the Google Play Store. Third-party or sideloaded apps may not be managed by this feature.
  2. Automatic Selection: While convenient, the automatic selection of apps for archiving may not always align with user preferences. Manual control over app archiving may be desired by some users.

The Future of App Archiving on Android

As App Archiving evolves, it has the potential to revolutionize storage management on Android devices. Future iterations may offer a manual selection of apps for archiving, integration with system settings, and expanded compatibility with apps downloaded outside the Play Store.

Recently discovered by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority, the strings of code for this feature were found in the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 update. Rahman’s experiment revealed that archiving an app significantly reduced its storage footprint while preserving user data. This feature, while currently accessible through the Google Play Store, offers a glimpse into the future of Android storage management.

In conclusion, Android’s App Archiving presents a promising solution to storage constraints, offering users a convenient way to declutter their devices without sacrificing app data and settings. As Android 15 approaches, anticipation mounts for the official rollout of this transformative feature, further enhancing the Android user experience.
