Wireframes, Low-Fidelity Prototypes, Mockups, and High-Fidelity Prototypes: What’s the Difference?

Wireframes, low-fidelity prototypes, mockups, and high-fidelity prototypes are all important parts of the design process, but they each have their own unique purpose.

Wireframes

High-fidelity prototypes

High-fidelity prototypes are the most realistic type of prototype. They are the closest representation to the final product. They’re fully functional and look and feel just like the final product. High-fidelity prototypes showcase the intricate details of a design, allowing designers and stakeholders to test and refine the user flow, interactions, and overall functionality. High-fidelity prototypes are used for final testing and validation before a product is launched.

So, which type of prototype should you use?

It depends on the stage of the design process you are in and what you are trying to achieve.

Wireframes are a good choice for early-stage brainstorming and ideation. Low-fidelity prototypes are a good choice for testing user flows and navigation.
