WhatsApp Begins Beta Testing Screen Sharing Feature for Video Calls

2 Mins read

WhatsApp, one of the leading messaging apps, is set to revolutionize communication with its latest update. The platform is rolling out a screen-sharing feature, allowing users to share their device screens with others during video calls. This exciting addition brings WhatsApp in line with popular communication tools like Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Skype. Beta testers on Android can now experience this feature, while stable version users can expect its arrival in the near future.

The screen sharing feature, spotted by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, offers an intuitive way to showcase the contents of your screen while on a video call. Users will find an icon representing an arrow atop a rectangular screen, which, when tapped, initiates the screen-sharing process. A standard Android recording/casting popup will appear, seeking your consent to proceed. After granting permission, a notification will inform you that screen sharing has begun.

This new feature brings numerous benefits and practical applications to WhatsApp users. It presents an opportunity for users to offer remote technical assistance to friends or family members, making troubleshooting and guidance easier than ever. Whether it’s demonstrating how to navigate a specific app or helping with settings configuration, screen sharing simplifies the process by enabling real-time visual support.

As with any feature involving sharing sensitive information, privacy, and security are paramount. WhatsApp ensures that the screen-sharing feature transmits content over an encrypted connection, guaranteeing that only participants on the call can access the shared screen. However, it’s essential to note that during screen sharing, everything visible on your screen, including passwords, payment details, photos, and other media, will be visible and audible to others on the call. Users should exercise caution and avoid sharing confidential or sensitive information during screen-sharing sessions.

While the screen-sharing feature is currently available to select beta users on Android, WABetaInfo reports that its release is expected on more devices soon. However, compatibility may vary, and older versions of Android or large group calls might not support this feature at present.

WhatsApp’s introduction of screen sharing reflects the platform’s commitment to offering innovative and interactive communication experiences. This feature opens up new possibilities for collaboration, remote assistance, and enhanced connections with friends, family, and colleagues.

WhatsApp’s decision to introduce screen sharing demonstrates its dedication to staying at the forefront of communication technology. With this feature, users can seamlessly share their screens during video calls, fostering more engaging and productive interactions. As the feature rolls out to more users, it is expected to become an indispensable tool for various scenarios, enabling users to connect, support, and collaborate with greater ease.

Please note: As a technology blog, Techpadi was unable to activate the screen-sharing feature at the time of testing. However, according to WABetaInfo, the feature has been successfully deployed to some users on the beta channel, and wider availability is anticipated.
