Google upgrades Gemini AI with new collaboration tools

1 Mins read

Google has released two major additions to its Gemini AI platform, enhancing how users create content and process information in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.

The first feature, Canvas, provides an interactive workspace within Gemini for real-time document and code editing. Users can generate initial drafts and then refine specific sections by simply highlighting text and requesting adjustments to tone, length, or formatting.

For developers, Canvas streamlines coding by offering live previews alongside the code. “Canvas empowers developers to quickly create initial working versions of their projects and provides a space for students to quickly learn coding concepts,” Google stated. The feature allows users to generate and preview HTML/React code, make modifications, and see updates instantly without switching between applications.

The second addition, Audio Overview, transforms written materials into engaging audio content. This feature converts documents, slides, and research reports into podcast-style discussions between two AI hosts who summarize content, connect topics, and provide unique perspectives—making it easier to digest complex information while multitasking.

Gemini will create a podcast-style discussion between two AI hosts who, with just a click, launch into a lively deep-dive conversation based on your uploaded files,” explained Google.

Both features are rolling out globally for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers. Canvas is available in all supported languages, while Audio Overview is currently limited to English with more languages planned.

Industry observers note the growing competition in AI functionality, with similar features already available from rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI. Interestingly, OpenAI released its own feature called Canvas in October, highlighting the competitive naming conventions in the AI space.

Canvas and Audio Overview represent Google’s latest effort to position Gemini as a comprehensive collaborative tool that helps users “bring their ideas to life.”
