The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirmed that its official website has been compromised by hackers, just two weeks after unveiling its redesigned platform.
The attack on Nigeria’s primary statistical agency raises concerns about the security of vital national data, including economic reports and population statistics used for policy-making and national planning. The Bureau has warned the public to disregard any information posted on its website until full recovery is achieved.
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of cyber threats facing Nigerian institutions. According to the 2024 African Perspectives on Cyber Security Report, organizations in Nigeria face an average of 3,759 cyberattacks weekly, with government institutions specifically targeted by approximately 1,791 attacks per week.
“This attack highlights the importance of proactive measures such as continuous monitoring, regular security audits, and employee training,” said Adebola Akande, a cybersecurity consultant.
The breach follows similar attacks on African government institutions, including recent incidents at Kenya’s Micro and Small Enterprise Authority and Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission, where sensitive data was reportedly sold on the dark web.

While the NBS works to restore its website, the Bureau has advised stakeholders to verify statistical information through its verified social media accounts and official announcements.
The incident occurs amid Nigeria’s push for increased digitalization, highlighting the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures to protect critical government infrastructure.
In the meantime, the NBS has committed to providing updates through its social media platforms and ensuring the integrity of national statistical data remains uncompromised.
