With the ongoing wave of sexual predators lurking around the corners of the internet to prey on unsuspecting teenagers, it has become pertinent for social media companies to protect their users, especially the younger demography.

To put this security in place, Snapchat has unveiled a suite of new safety features designed to protect its teenage users from sexual predators and scammers. The popular social media platform is rolling out these measures in response to the growing concern over “sextortion,” a form of online blackmail targeting young users.

Key among the new protections is an enhanced warning system that alerts teens when they receive messages from unfamiliar accounts. These pop-ups will now appear for contacts without mutual friends, those reported by other users, or originating from regions associated with scam activities. Additionally, Snapchat will block friend requests to teens from accounts lacking mutual connections and based in high-risk areas.

To further fortify user security, Snapchat has improved its blocking mechanism. Now, when a user blocks an account, any new profiles created from the same device will be automatically blocked, preventing persistent harassers from circumventing restrictions.

The app is also refining its location-sharing features, implementing more frequent reminders about privacy settings on the “Snap Map.” Users will have easier access to customize their location visibility and remove themselves from the map entirely.

These updates complement Snapchat’s existing safety measures, including the “Family Center” for parental oversight and content moderation tools. Global Head of Platform Safety, Jacqueline Beauchere, emphasized that these features aim to “better protect teens from potential online harms and enhance real-friend connections.”
