WhatsApp for Android would s Get a New Favourites Tab to Add Contacts to Speed Dial

WhatsApp is working on a new feature: a dedicated “Favorites” tab to allow users to add, reorder, and remove their favorite contacts and groups right within the app settings. The new “Favorite” feature will also allow users to set up a speed dial of contacts for easier accessibility. According to reports by WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on integrating a Favourites tab within the Settings menu. The feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.18 update. Despite being present within the codes of the app, it is not visible and users who have joined the Beta Programme will not be able to see it. The report highlighted that currently the feature could not be explored due to the same restrictions.

Fast and Easy Access to Your Closest Circle

Through this feature, WhatsApp aims to simplify the process of locating and managing favorite contacts and groups within the calls tab. This enhancement will be particularly beneficial as managing these favorites may currently be complicated for some users. Imagine having your most frequent call recipients just a tap away. The “Favorites” tab, if implemented, would act as a speed dial within WhatsApp. Users would likely be able to add and manage a list of their favorite contacts, and groups allowing for instant access to voice or video calls with those who matter most.

A Familiar Concept, a Fresh Approach

This feature also borrows a page from the concept of speed dial functionalities found on many smartphones. However, integrating it directly within WhatsApp would eliminate the need to switch between apps for quick calls.

Location and ‘Projected’ Limitation of the “Favourite” tab Feature

Based on a screenshot shared by the publication, the new setting option was located between Account and Privacy options. A new option of Favourites is now visible with the description “Add, reorder, remove”. Opening the setting, a new screen mentions, “Make it easy to find the people and groups that matter most across WhatsApp”.

If this is the intended use case of the feature, it might be redundant to many users. Based on the screenshot, the feature is buried under two different screens (home screen > Settings > Favourites), which would make using it cumbersome. The current interface of the instant messaging app automatically pushes the chats up where messages were shared most recently.

The Road to Release: Patience is a Virtue

It’s important to remember that this feature is currently under development. There’s no official confirmation from WhatsApp regarding a wider rollout to Beta testers. It could take weeks or even months before the “Favorites” tab becomes available to Beta testers and all Android users.

A Promising Step Forward

Despite the wait and projected limitation, the “Favorites” tab represents a potential step forward in streamlining communication on WhatsApp for Android. By providing a designated space for your most important contacts, WhatsApp could make calling experiences faster and more convenient. Whether this feature becomes a permanent fixture remains to be seen, but it certainly has the potential to enhance the way users connect with loved ones on WhatsApp.
