WhatsApp Testing Feature to Allow Users Set HD Photo and Video as Default Uploads

Attention photo and videography enthusiasts who use WhatsApp! The wait for effortless high-quality media sharing might be nearing its end. According to reports, WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature that allows users to set all media uploads to HD by default.

The WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo spotted the new feature in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.17 build. The beta version for Android began rolling out to testers on Monday through the Google Play Beta Program.
The messaging platform introduced the HD Photo Sharing feature in August 2023, and shortly after added support for high-resolution videos as well. Currently, WhatsApp offers the option to send photos and videos in standard or high quality (HD). However, users need to manually select the HD option every time they share media. This can be cumbersome, especially for those who consistently want their recipients to receive their photos and videos in the highest possible quality.

The new feature, spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android, introduces a dedicated setting within the app’s Storage and Data menu. This setting, titled “Media upload quality,” will reportedly offer two options: Standard quality and HD quality. All future media uploads will adhere to their preferred option once a user selects their preferred option.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the potential benefits:

Before We Get Too Excited…

It’s important to note that this feature is currently in the beta testing phase, limited to a specific group of Android users. There’s no official confirmation yet on a wider rollout or its availability for iOS and desktop platforms.

Here are some additional things to consider:

Overall, the potential introduction of a default HD media upload setting in WhatsApp seems like a welcome improvement for users who prioritize sharing high-quality photos and videos. We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from WhatsApp to see when this feature becomes available to the public and on which platforms. it is also important to note that the feature is reported for Android, but it is not yet confirmed for iOS or the desktop app. It should be noted that none of the current options allows users to send media in its original resolution, especially if it is a large-sized file. To do that, users will have to share it as a document.
