Google has reportedly begun rolling out a beta integration of its conversational AI, Gemini, directly within the messaging app. Get ready to chat with a new kind of friend
According to a report by 9to5Google, some Google Messages beta users have received a new update that shows Gemini as a contact when tapping the ‘new conversation’ floating action button (FAB).
What is Gemini AI?
Gemini is Google’s new AI assistant designed to hold conversations, assist with tasks, and provide informative answers. Unlike the current iteration of Google Assistant, which primarily responds to voice commands, Gemini is built for back-and-forth text-based interactions.
Early Access for Testers
According to reports, some Google Messages beta users on specific devices are now seeing a “Gemini” contact appear when they tap to start a new conversation. Tapping on this contact initiates a chat with Gemini AI, allowing users to:
- Ask questions and get informative answers: Gemini can access and process information from Google Search to provide helpful responses to your queries.
- Get assistance with tasks: Need help writing an email, planning a trip, or brainstorming ideas? Gemini might be able to lend a hand.
- Engage in conversation: Feeling chatty? Gemini can hold conversations on various topics, potentially offering a more interactive experience than a simple search query.
Gemini AI appears with its logo and a short description that says “Write, plan, learn, and more with Google AI”. Clicking on this icon opens a new chat where users can converse with the chatbot. Those who wish to become beta testers can go to the Google Play Store, search for Google Messages, and click the link to join the beta programme.
Limited Availability for Now
It’s important to note that this feature is currently in a limited beta phase. Only a specific group of Google Messages beta testers on certain devices (reportedly Pixel 6 and later, Samsung Galaxy S22 and later, and some others) are seeing the Gemini contact yet. Additionally, testers need to have RCS messaging enabled to access this functionality.
