WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has introduced a feature called “Secret Codes.” The feature was developed to enhance the security of locked chats. The initial introduction of locked chats earlier this year allowed users to protect conversations in a separate folder using device authentication methods like fingerprints, face scans, or passwords.
The new “Secret Codes” feature takes this a step further by letting users hide their locked chats entirely from view. Instead of displaying the locked chats folder alongside other conversations, users can now opt to conceal it behind a unique password. This secret code can include a combination of letters, numbers, special characters, and even emojis, adding a personalized touch to the security layer.
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, shared the announcement, stating, “Now you can set your locked chats to only appear when you type the secret code in the search bar, so no one can ‘unintentionally’ discover your most private conversations.”
The flexibility of this feature allows users to customize their level of privacy. Users can choose not to use a secret code. However, for those who prioritize an extra layer of confidentiality, the secret code feature provides a discreet way to access personal conversations.
