The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the commencement of applications for its 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme.
The program, which is in its first phase, was announced yesterday by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who officially opened the application portal.
According to the Honourable Minister, the program is done in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and it plans to train 3 million people in technical skills before 2025. The first phase of the program, which has just started receiving applications, will train 30,000 people in the next 3 months.
“As part of our plans to train 3 million technical talent by 2025, I’m excited to launch the 3MTT programme, targeted at generating a pipeline of technical talent across Nigeria. The programme is a key part of @FMoCDENigeria plans to achieve our objective of becoming a net exporter of talent and significantly grow our digital economy,” Mr Tijani said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Furthermore, the minister said some of the skills Nigerians would be trained on in the first phase are skills that use technology to enhance various roles without directly involving tech creation. The skills people will be trained in during the first phase are:
- Software Development
- UI/UX Design
- Data Analysis & Visualisation
- Quality Assurance
- Product Management
- Data Science
- Animation
- AI / Machine Learning
- Cybersecurity
- Game Development
- Cloud Computing
- Dev Ops
The training is planned to be “hybrid, meaning that it combines online and in-person components. While the majority of the training can be done remotely, there are aspects that will require in-person training,” the ministry said in the statement.
According to the minister, to achieve high success rate of the program and as a way to reduce the cost of quality on all its initiatives, the Ministry would be adopting the “1%-10%-100% Implementation Rule”. With this rule, the program starts small and gradually increases the scope as the projects progress.
The Minister added that the number 1 in the mechanism denotes “Prototyping”, 10 denotes “Piloting”, and 100 denotes “Scaling”.
