Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is set to address a significant limitation of its Threads app by introducing a separate account deletion option. This feature will allow users to delete their Threads accounts without affecting their Instagram accounts. Michel Protti, Meta’s Chief Privacy Officer (Product), revealed this development during a recent event, suggesting that the feature could be rolled out by December.
Threads: A Rival to X formerly Twitter
Threads was introduced by Meta in July as a direct competitor to X formerly Twitter, after Elon Musk introduced X premium and its intriguing features limiting free users from accessing some of its features. It quickly gained traction, with more than 10 million users signing up within hours of its launch. However, one of the notable drawbacks of the Threads app was its account deletion policy.
Overcoming a Limitation
Meta tightly integrated Threads with Instagram, making it impossible for users to delete their Threads accounts independently without also losing access to their Instagram profiles. This limitation frustrated many users, but Meta appears to be actively working on a solution.
A Separate Delete Option
Michel Protti’s announcement provides hope for users seeking more control over their Threads accounts. Once the separate delete option is implemented, users will be able to deactivate or delete their Threads accounts without affecting their Instagram presence.
Challenges in Implementation
While Protti didn’t specify whether the feature would be available for Android, iOS, or desktop users, he acknowledged the technical challenges associated with its development. Currently, users can deactivate their Threads accounts or mute them to avoid notifications without any impact on their Instagram accounts.
Threads and the Fediverse
Additionally, Meta is exploring the integration of Threads with the fediverse, a network of interconnected independent servers designed for communication. Threads was previously announced to be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, which is common in the fediverse. However, Meta is evaluating how the system will handle situations where a user deletes a Threads post after it has already propagated to other servers.

Threads’ rapid growth in user numbers within hours of its launch highlights the demand for new social media platforms and communication tools.
