Google Introduces AI-Powered 'Help Me Write' Feature for Gmail and Google Docs

During its annual Google I/O 2023 event, Google unveiled a new feature called ‘Help Me Write’ alongside several other AI-based enhancements. This writing enhancement tool, powered by artificial intelligence, is designed to assist users in composing emails and documents within Gmail and Google Docs. The company announced that the feature would be rolled out to testers enrolled in the Google Workspace Labs program, with availability on iOS and Android platforms.

According to a report from 9to5Google, the AI-powered ‘Help Me Write’ feature has started to become available for testers in the Workspace Labs program using Gmail on Android and iOS devices. Previously, the feature was only accessible to desktop users as part of Workspace Labs. The Help Me Write feature aims to simplify the email drafting process by generating a draft based on user prompts.

To utilize the Help Me Write feature in Gmail, Google has provided instructions on its support page. Users can open Gmail on their iOS or Android device, tap the compose button, and select the Help Me Write feature located at the bottom right corner of the screen. From there, users can enter a prompt such as “A thank you letter for my job interview” or “A job application.” The AI will then generate a draft email, which users can edit or make changes to before sending it.

One notable aspect of the Help Me Write feature is the ability for users to provide feedback on the generated text or create a new version of the text by selecting “Recreate.” While the feature is currently available in Gmail, Google has also mentioned its plans to extend the Help Me Write functionality to Google Docs, although an exact timeline for its release has not been disclosed.

In addition to Help Me Write, Google announced other AI-powered features for its services. At Google I/O 2023, the company introduced the Magic Editor tool for Google Photos, which is set to arrive later this year. This tool will enable users to enhance images by adding missing details to partially visible objects and even move subjects within photos after they have been captured.

With the introduction of Help Me Write and other AI-based features, Google continues to leverage artificial intelligence to streamline and enhance user experiences across its suite of applications. These advancements demonstrate Google’s commitment to utilizing AI technology to empower users and make everyday tasks more efficient and intuitive.
