Even with the many strides and breakthroughs in medicine, some ailment has become like a plague threatening our very existence. One of such ailments is Cancer. Cancer is a disease in which some of the body cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can start at any part of the human body made up of trillions of cells.

WHO report on cancer on 3rd Feb 2022 has it that Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths. The known risk factors of cancers are tobacco products, alcohol consumption an unhealthy diet and many others. With the wide use of cell phones and the widespread of cancer, there have been speculations that cell phones are one of the risk factors leading to cancer. How true is this assumption?

Can Cellphones Cause Cancer?
There are two major reasons why people are concerned that cell (or mobile) phones might have the potential to cause specific types of cancer or other health problems: (1) Cell phones emit radiation (in the form of Radio-frequency radiation) which is likely to cause cancers in human. (2) Because cell phones are being used close to the head, likely to be emitting ionizing radiation, a form of energy found to cause some brain cancers.

The concerns that cell phones contribute to the global surge of cancer cases are replete. However, there has been no concrete evidence that suggests that cell phone use does cause brain or other kinds of cancer in humans. Radio-frequencies radiation that cell phones emit are within the frequency range of 0.7–2.7 GHz which is too low to damage the DNA, which causes changes to genes that may increase the risk of cancer. The body absorbing the Radio-frequency radiation the cell phone emits can only heat the body part (ear, head and palm) where it is held. Other than that, there are no known dangerous consequences.

As I conclude, it is important to note that cell phones are yet to be proven to cause cancers. However Epidemiologic researches are currently ongoing to ascertain the Radio-frequencies radiation exposures that will become dangerous for human health. Until then, let’s keep and fingers crossed and live without fears.
