#TwitterBan: Nigerian Government Lifts Twitter Ban

Nigeria’s federal government has announced the lift on the ban placed on Twitter.

The announcement was made by the Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE.

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022,” Mr Abdullahi said.

According to reports, the lifting suspension of Twitter services would be effective from midnight on the 13th of January, 2022.

This comes as a relief as many Nigerians have had to access Twitter through Virtual Private Network (VPN).

The ban on Twitter was announced on the 5th of June, 2021. The ban came after a tweet made by Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, was taken down by Twitter for going against its policy.

The government later explained, through the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity), Garba Shehu, that fake news was one of the reasons for the ban.

After the ban was placed, many public figures have deserted Twitter, while some kept using the platform.
