Twitter To Site Its First African Presence in Ghana

Microblogging site, Twitter, has announced that it would be setting up its first African presence in the West African country of Ghana.

Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO, made the announcement via a tweet on his verified Twitter handle that Twitter would be setting up a presence in Africa.

Twitter is now present on the continent. Thank you, Ghana and Nana Akufo-Addo,” he said.

In a statement posted on Twitter’s official blog, the company noted that the move to have an African headquarters is in line with its drive for growth:

Today, in line with our growth strategy, we’re excited to announce that we are now actively building a team in Ghana. To truly serve the public conversation, we must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent,” the company said in a blog post.

Reacting to the new development, the president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, expressed his delight at the choice of Ghana as home for Twitter’s headquarters.

The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is excellent news. Gov’t and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country.”

President Akufo-Addo also revealed that he held a virtual meeting with Jack on April 7, 2021.

As I indicated to Jack in our virtual meeting on 7th April 2021, this is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the development of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector. These are exciting times to be in and to do business in Ghana,” President Akufo-Addo added.

Twitter, in the statement on its official blog, stated its reason for choosing Ghana to house its African headquarters:

As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.

In related news, Twitter also posted job openings for its Ghanaian office. The company says it is looking for specialists to join several teams including product, design, engineering, marketing and communications at its Ghanaian office.
