Gmail reaches 10 billion downloads on Play Store

1 Mins read

Google-owned email client, Gmail, has crossed a new milestone after it passes 10 billion downloads on Google Play Store.

This feat makes Gmail for Android the fourth app to ever make such giant stride, trailing behind Google Play Services, YouTube, and Google Maps.

Gmail was launched in 2004, when email communication took a leap into the mainstream. The app is able to achieve this enviable milestone due to the usefulness of the app for communication, as well as how the app comes pre-installed on Android devices.

Many Android users have come to choose Gmail as their preferred email client. To make Gmail more mobile friendly, a mobile app was created, and this has helped the integration of Gmail, making it the go-to service for electronic mail on mobile.

Google has been having a field day in it purchases. One of the acquisitions that turns out to be a good call for Google was the acquisition of Android in 2005.

Android was created in 2003 by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White, before it was acquired by Google for $50 million. Google has kept Android open-source, and this has helped the company to distribute some of its core apps.

Gmail comes pre-installed on Android devices, and since Android runs on several brands of smart phones, Gmail automatically runs on those devices. This has attributed to the wide usage of Gmail.

While Gmail started out as an email app, it has evolved into something more, especially with the integration of Meet, Contacts, Chats, and the iconic bottom that let users unsend mails.

With the productivity level of Gmail, it was expected that it would have joined the big four earlier than now. However, the delay could have been caused by the creation of Gmail Go.

Gmail Go is a version of Gmail that was made for devices with low memory.
